I never went home the night before. I couldn't go home. I'd been handling the situation pretty well until I had to explain it to someone. That was the first time I had to refer to her as "my ex" and somehow I wasn't prepared. I walked the North woods until the Sun came up, walked to the State Park and walked some more.

chapter one 03:47
John let me leave on good terms, even mentioning that he was confirmed cancer-free and in the clear earlier that day. Three years passed, during which many things changed. Most importantly (in the immediate sense), I had received several pay incresases, and the apartment was finally renovated. Then I was back, signing the same lease again with John's widow. With all the logic of a dream world, I would have two apartments for the next two weeks: A broken home and the place where my twenties ended.

In a remote rural region of an internal continent, the inhabitants live simple lives and in this they are content. In the forest, an orgy commences, watched unknown from a branch nearby. Elsewhere, one lone creature gazes in wonder at the solid stone sky. He says one star has been getting larger, though no one else seems to see. Each morning when the stars rise, indeed, one gets brighter gradually, and when it twinkles, it tingles in his neck and his stomach turns. He cries out in despair, "I don't trust this shit at all, man!" Perceiving him as paranoid, the others only glare. The troubled one, Seeking soltitude and serenity, walks in the woods. Stumbling upon the sexual escapades, he climbs a tree to watch, you know, try to feel good. His eyes freeze in terror when they lock with another pair concealed in the leaves. Shivering and shaking, he cannot breathe. He tries to hold on until his balance... leaves. The young women shriek: "What the fuck!" "Fuckin' freak!" "Behold; it is the paranoid one! He speaks of an evil from a faraway land." "How preposterous; that shit's believed by none!" ...and so, following the arrest, he said nothing at the trial, knowing none would understand. Now he lives locked in a wooden box, as is the law of the land. Sneered the sentinel, "None other in this God-forsaken planet sees the nonsense of which you rant. Evil may we be, but our minds are of man. Yours is that of a plant." And the stars did fade that night, and the guard walked away, not turning his head when a hoarse, shaking voice called out from the cage. This is what he said: "I'd warn you that they're coming, but they're already here; never too far away, nor too near; watching from the rooftops, hiding up the creek, creeping right past you now as we speak. They're going to cut you open, remove your innards, and use some for fuel while they eat the rest for dinner; chanting six hundred threescore and six; laughing while they choke you with their fucking dicks; and when this wrath is brought upon thee, don't say you weren't warned. Just wait, motherfuckers, you'll see." Just wait, motherfuckers. You'll see.
